"Grouse has been a significant food source for my family and community. a male grouse can stand on a rock, stump or fallen log and then begin flapping his wings back and forth, building up speed, creating a distinctive drumming sound. Represented in this painting, the drumbeat connects us all, when all creatures hear and feel the sound collectively." -- Provided by artist.
"Inspired by my grandmother's embroidery, this art piece symbolizes our connection to our Ancestors, and to the future generations. The forward motion of the flowers is a reminder to keep creating art. Creativity can be like a muscle where the more we practice, the more we create. Often there can be ebbs and flows. However, it takes courage and commitment to keep going and keep creating." --Provided by the artist.
"This painting shows the process of unlearning certain patterns and behaviours that can be unhelpful. This act can be symbolized by repeatedly walking into a porcupine. First, we may not even see it at all. Next, we may see the porcupine, but may continue to touch it to double check the sharpness of its quills. As we become more self aware and heal, we learn to eventually walk around the porcupine by baking a different path. It is all part of unlearning and healing." -- Provided by artist.
"Beavers are creative beings that fall trees as well as weave branches to create their dams. This practice resonates with the weaving of yellow cedar and wool to make fringe for Chilikat ceremonial robes. This reside to use sustainable practices can be seen as innovative; however, it is important to acknowledge that sustainability is not new to our people. It is bringing forward our ways of being and our culture to the forefront of our actions and art."-- Provided by artist.
