The Wolf is an important family crest. The Wolf was often associated with the spirit power a man needed to become a successful hunter. The Wolf is said to be the land manifestation of the killer whale. According to legend a supernatural white wolf transformed itself into a killer whale and thus the whales show white markings and have a habit of traveling in groups like wolves.

Raven was full of supernatural power -- he could dive beneath the sea, rise into the sky, or make anything happen by willing it. His legendary antics were usually motivated by greed, and he loved to tease, woo and trick others. Raven is featured more than any other creature of legend as he is credited with creating the world. This print shows Raven placing fish in the rivers and sea.

In Northcoast legend the Raven is credited with creating the world -- the lakes, rivers, ocean, night and day, scattering the eggs of salmon and trout and filling the forests with animals. The first humans were hiding in a giant clam shell and Raven gave them life by releasing them onto the beach and giving them fire.

The identifying feature of this member of the shark family includes two small, round nostrils and prominent fins. There is a Haida legend of a woman who was carried off by a dogfish and became one of their kind.

Wasco is the Haida's sea monster, a wolf-whale combination. Wasco could move on land as well as sea and terrorized Haida villages. Is this depiction you can see how large Wasco is in relation to the killer whales he has caught (and eaten).
Beaver frontlet carved in alder. Abalone shell eyes, stomach, and around face. Eyebrows in black acrylic paint, nose and mouth in red. Beaver holds a stick. Ten sea lion whiskers (two missing) poke up from top of frontlet. Good condition.
