applicant should have a sufficient level, either through education or experience, to complete the programme successfully.

This course offers the student the possibility
of two areas of training . .. clerk -typist and clerkstenographer. The clerk -typist option is offered
only at Burnaby, and Dawson Creek, B.C .
Individual students will be counselled into the
most appropriate area for their particular abilities
and aptitudes after enrolment in the course.
A student training as a clerk-typist will take
recordkeeping and bookkeeping in addition to the

Many employment opportunities exist in the

Welding i s an industrial art in a highly competitive field. It requires constant physical coordination of arms, hands, eye and brain and the
welder develops manipulative ski lis through
manual training. Basic metallurgy, heat treatment,
blueprint reading, plate and pipe layout, applied
mathematics and principles of safety education
are some of the technical subjects covered whi le
several weld ing procedures are applied to various
types of metal. On completion of the course a
student wi II have gained sufficient practical experience and related theory to take a welding
test under the A.S.M. E. sec. IX, C .S.A.- W- 47,

of qualification acceptable to industry.
The welding trade is universal in its application. Construction welding appeals to certain
men due to the variety of working locations,
while other welders prefer to remain in the industrial centres, where employment opportunities
occur in practically every mechanical or metal
trade.
Due to technological developments, welding
equipment and techniques are constantly changing, thus a welder, though employed, should
constantly strive to update his skills.

REQUIREMENTS

FOR

1971

ADMISSION:

Welding upgrading training is confined to persons presently
or recently employed in welding, who wish to improve their
techniques or become proficient in special processes, or who
are approved for the following certification; A.S.M.E. sec. IX,
C.S.A.-W-47, orA.W.S. Codes.
Persons requiring Provincial Government Certification are
required to apply to the Welding Inspector, Department of Public
Works, for assessment of their credentials. The Inspector may
stipulate a certain length of time for instruction before taking
the test. The testing appointment will be arranged by the Chief
Welding Instructor of the school.
Applicants must be healthy and free from defective vision,
hearing and respiration. If the training period is to be in excess
of six days duration, applicants will be required to present a
Health Certificate and proof of a recent Chest X-ray.

GENERAL

INFORMATION:
Upgrading runs continuously and may be taken at each school
as space becomes available.
Length of training time will be variable for each trainee, in accordance with the Welding Inspector's recommendation.

employment as apprentices in the Automotive Meehan ical Repair Trade.
The employment situation is normally indoors and
may be anywhere from a small repair shop or service
station doing general mechanical repairs, to the compi ex service department of a large automobile dealership.
In many cases the work involves direct contact
with the pub Iic where courtesy, cooperation and at
times the ability to accept criticism is important.

This course is of a practical nature and is designed to prepare young men for employment as apprentices in the Carpentry Trade. Students receive a
thorough grounding on equipment and materials and
are taught the correct use of basic tools.
The carpenter of today must be trained to keep
abreast of modern developments and the competent
craftsman is always in demand.
Carpenters work primarily with wood and are
traditionally associated with the construction industry. They must have a sound working knowledge of
the use of wood and other .building materials such as
composition board, plastics, asbestos and metal
which may be used in the place of wood.
.Many specialized trades overlap each other in
the construction of a building and the carpenter must
know and understand his relationship to these trades
and be able to work with others on construction
projects.
